Book Review: The Language of Love & Respect by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs

I read Dr. Emerson Eggerichs' book Love and Respect about two years ago, before marrying my wonderful husband. I really enjoyed Eggerichs' book and insights into what makes a Christian marriage work. That book helped to shape the way that I thought about how I reacted to my (at that time future) spouse.

The Language of Love & Respect is a follow up book to Dr. Eggerichs' Love and Respect. In the Language of Love & Respect, Eggerichs spends a great amount of time going back over the points that he made in his Love and Respect book. The vast majority of the information was a kind of review of the material from the previous book. He gave new examples to the concepts that he had already presented.

Reading this book was a good reminder of how to view the different communication cycles that married couples find themselves in. Of course, reading it now that I'm married gives me a greater appreciation of the material presented.

The last third of this book covers some new information about how to talk to each other the "Jesus way." Eggerichs loves his acrostics and so he has one for this as well. I was challenged to make sure that my communication with my husband is following this Biblical approach.

I would recommend this book to any married couple (or single person looking to marry in the future). The ideas that Eggerichs presents can really change the way that you think about communication.

(I received a complimentary copy of this book for the purpose of review.)
