Book Review: Reclaiming Lily by Patti Lacy

Excerpt: Shivers wracked Kai. She moved her lips but could not summon the strange words Grandfather had whispered a lifetime ago. Oh, but she heard them! Each syllable stirred a cooling breeze. She righted her bicycle. Kai, Second Daughter of the Chang family, Golden Dragon of China, graduate of the world's greatest medical school, would battle the fates to honor Mother's last wish, Grandfather's first legacy. If it took her last breath, she would reclaim Lily. It was her fate. Reclaiming Lily, pg 22.

Back Cover: A Mother's Love. A Sister's Promise.
Will Two Women Find the Path to Save a Young Woman's Life?

When an insidious genetic disease strikes her family, Harvard graduate Dr. Kai Chang must alert Lily, the sister Kai left on orphanage steps years earlier. Standing in her way are the Powells, Lily's adoptive parents. Gloria Powell, a shy pastor's wife, distrusts Kai and thinks her presence will send their troubled seventeen-year-old over the precipice of teenaged angst. A Texas-sized tornado whirls when Kai summons the Powells to a Fort Worth hotel. Tempers and cultures collide. Can Kai and Gloria, separated by culture and faith but devoted to Lily, reconcile their differences and trust their dreams to God?

My Review: Patti Lacy tells a story of deep pain and great joy. Reclaiming Lily is full of difficult, true to life situations. International adoption, kidney disease, teenage angst, attempted suicide and a host of other difficult topics are found in these pages. Lacy deals with these hard issues in a wonderful way, showing that the God of Love transcends all these troubles, and He is with us even in our darkest moments. This message comes through loud and clear, but is not preachy. I was captivated by the characters, and found some of the details very interesting, especially in regard to the cultural revolution in China. This book is well worth the read.

My Rating:

My Recommendation: I recommend this book to readers who are interested in fiction that explores cultural differences and kidney disease.
